Ravens’ training camp: Odafe Oweh on a mission

OWINGS MILLS — The Ravens completed their third practice of training camp, and instead of rain, the players had to deal with hot, humid conditions where the temperature reached 90 degrees on Tuesday.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson missed his third consecutive day because of illness.

Here’s a breakdown of the practice

Oweh dominates: Even though the team is practicing without pads, Ravens outside linebacker Odafe Oweh is dominating the offense. Oweh has consistently run past the tackles and into the backfield, where he would be in position to make sacks.

During practice, coach John Harbaugh had to pull Oweh aside and tell him to lower the intensity.

“I had to pull the reins on him a little bit,” Harbaugh said. “He understands to stay away from the quarterback as much as possible. We don’t want to have any car crashes out there. But he’s doing a great job. He’s been in the backfield almost every play.”

In April, the Ravens exercised Oweh’s fifth-year option, which will cost them a reasonable $13.3 million for 2025.

Last season, Oweh appeared in 13 games after dealing with an ankle injury in Week 2 and finished with 23 tackles, 12 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, and tied a career-high with five sacks. Oweh, who was selected by the Ravens 31st overall in the 2021 NFL draft, led the team with a pass rush win rate of 18.2 percent, according to Pro Football Focus.

Bateman makes more plays: Wide receiver Rashod Bateman had another strong day and made an acrobatic touchdown catch just in-bounds. He is running solid routes and showing good hands in traffic. The Ravens expected Bateman to have a breakout year, especially after extending his contract this offseason. It’s early, but Bateman looks ready to make a bigger impact on offense.

More production from the wideouts: Second-year wide receiver Zay Flowers continues to have solid practices. Flowers looks even more agile than last year and has juked several defenders after catching the ball. … Rookie fourth-round pick Devontez Walker might have had the catch of the day when he dove to catch a deep pass from Emory Jones on the far practice field that excited the crowd. … Deonte Harty had his busiest day with several receptions. Harty is the favorite to win the starting job as the returner.

Maulet has a nose for the ball: Ravens cornerback Arthur Maulet had his third interception in as many days. This time, he grabbed a pass by Josh Johnson on seven-on-seven drills. He will provide valuable depth at cornerback and will earn more playing time in a crowded, talented secondary.

Absences: In addition to Jackson, the other Ravens who missed practice were running back Keaton Mitchell (PUP), outside linebacker Adisa Isaac (Non-Football Injury), linebacker Yvandy Rigby (undisclosed), and cornerback T. J. Tampa Jr. (PUP).
