Ravens Training Camp: Heated exchanges between wide receivers and defensive backs

OWINGS MILLS — One of the highlights of the Ravens’ training camp is the one-on-one battles between the wide receivers and tight ends against the defensive backs.

There were several heavy-weight battles on Monday when temperatures climbed higher than 90 degrees.

Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Mark Andrews matched up against All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton, The two had a physical battle as Andrews tried to create separation but Hamilton was able to battle through the contact. Quarterback Lamar Jackson threw a pass to the outside of Andrews, but Hamilton reached out and deflected the ball to the ground.

Later, fellow tight end Isaiah Likely matched up against Hamilton. This time, Likely was able to create some distance, and after a brief bobble, he was able to come down with the ball in the end zone.

Malik Cunningham, who made the switch from quarterback to wide receiver, beat cornerback Arthur Maulet down the sideline.

Second-year wideout Zay Flowers beat Damarion Williams twice for long receptions.

“[It was] a good practice, [and it was a] tough practice,” coach John Harbaugh said. “[It was] hot, and the guys did a good job working through it, and we got some good work done.”

Humphrey vs. Lamar: After intercepting Jackson twice last week, cornerback Marlon Humphrey picked him off again Monday. This time, Jackson stared down a wide receiver and threw the ball directly into Humphrey’s hands.

“I told him he needs to get his hands right,” Jackson joked. “That’s why I’ve started throwing interceptions to him. He dropped a few last year, so I’m hoping that’s helping him out.”

Beat the heat?: As the temperatures climbed throughout the afternoon, Harbaugh liked the intensity.

When asked whether he thinks about cutting practice short because of the heat, Harbaugh replied: “No.”

Did any of the players try to persuade him to end the session early? “No.”

Injury updates: Wide receiver Rashod Bateman exited practice about an hour early after bumping into cornerback Ka’Dar Holman during the one-on-one drills and did not return. Harbaugh said Bateman was dealing with soreness. … Wide receiver/returner Deonte Harty is also sore and did not practice. … Cornerback Trayvon Mullen, outside linebacker Joe Evans, inside linebacker Yvandy Rigby, and defensive lineman Rayshad Nichols also did not practice.
