Ravens Training Camp: Tight ends play well again

OWINGS MILLS — Ravens tight end Mark Andrews practices at full speed and wants the ball on every play.

The three-time Pro Bowler had plenty of opportunities at training camp on Tuesday.

Andrews was targeted numerous times by quarterback Lamar Jackson and came up with some impressive receptions. In one instance, he made a diving catch in the middle of the field after being pursued by defensive tackle Travis Jones. Andrews also had a touchdown catch.

Fellow tight end Isaiah Likely continued his strong camp and made several contested receptions in double coverage and had a touchdown reception between Marlon Humphrey and Kyle Hamilton. The key for offensive coordinator Todd Monken is to find ways to get both players on the field at the same time this season.

“Obviously, you try to get your best playmakers on the field, and they’re two of them,” Monken said after practice Tuesday.  “Those two guys are unique weapons. So, we got to do a great job of being creative and getting them on the field. We love both of them.”

Bateman out, other absences: One day after leaving an hour early because of soreness, wide receiver Rashod Bateman did not practice on Tuesday. Coach John Harbaugh was not scheduled to meet with the media, so Bateman’s status is uncertain. The other absences were wide receiver/returner Deonte Harty, rookie wide receiver Devontez Walker, defensive tackle Rayshad Nichols, cornerback Trayvon Mullen, outside linebacker Joe Evans, and inside linebacker Yvandy Rigby.

Another turnover: Inside linebacker, Chris Board made an interception on a pass from Josh Johnson that deflected off wide receiver Dayton Wade. The Ravens’ secondary has played extremely well the past two weeks.

Hamm to IR: The Ravens placed defensive end Malik Hamm on IR with a knee injury. The team signed linebacker Quincy Roche.

Position switch: Undrafted rookie Qadir Ismail, the son of former Ravens wideout Qadry Ismail, has been switched from wide receiver to tight end. Qadir Ismail, a graduate of John Carroll High School in Bel Air, is a big target at 6 feet 6, 232 pounds. Ismail also played quarterback at Villanova.

Hall of Famer visits: Ravens Hall of Famer Jonathan Ogden attended Tuesday’s practice. The Ravens used their first-ever draft pick (fourth overall) of the 1996 NFL draft to select Ogden out of UCLA. Ogden is a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2000s. Four months after he announced his retirement, the Ravens inducted him into their Ring of Honor.
