Derrick Henry, Ravens run past Bills, 35-10, In Week 4

BALTIMORE — On the Ravens’ first play, Derrick Henry took a handoff, found a seam on the right side of the offensive line on a block from fullback Pat Ricard, and barreled for an 87-yard touchdown run.

It was the longest run from scrimmage in the Ravens’ history and set the tone for a dominant 35-10 victory over the previously undefeated Buffalo Bills on Sunday night at M&T Bank Stadium.

Henry finished with 199 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown. He also caught a 5-yard score.

The Ravens improved to 2-2 and are one game behind the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson was 13-for-18 for 156 yards with two touchdowns.

The Ravens had dominated the game until early in the third quarter when the Bills cut the lead to 21-10 on a 3-yard run by Ty Johnson. That play was set up by a 51-yard heave from Josh Allen to Khalil Shakir, who got loose in the Ravens’ secondary.

The Ravens answered when Kyle Van Noy strip-sacked Allen and Kyle Hamilton recovered the ball. The Ravens took advantage of the short field and extended the lead to 28-10 on an 8-yard run by Jackson.

This time, there was no fourth-quarter collapse.

Henry broke another 38-yard run to the Buffalo 2. Four plays later after a holding penalty on Buffalo (3-1), Henry fumbled in the end zone, but the ball was recovered by Ricard for the touchdown.

Baltimore running back Justice Hill caught all six of his targets for 78 yards with a touchdown.

Van Noy tied a franchise record with two sacks in three straight games.

Allen was 16-for-29 for 180 yards and was pulled for backup Mitch Trubisky midway through the fourth quarter.

The Ravens led, 7-3, at the end of the first quarter on Henry’s 87-yard run and a 50-yard field goal by Buffalo kicker Tyler Bass.

Baltimore extended the lead on the first play of the second quarter on a 5-yard pass from Jackson to Henry. It was Henry’s first receiving touchdown since 2019.

The Ravens extended the lead to 21-3 on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to Justice Hill with 7:35 left in the second quarter. The Bills managed just 90 yards and were 1-for-8 on third down in the first half.

Vorhees’ absence prompts change to offensive line: Ravens starting left guard Andrew Vorhees was ruled out with an ankle injury. Pat Mekari moved from right tackle to left guard. Rookie Roger Rosengarten got his first career start at right tackle. The rest of the offensive line was the same as the past three games — Ronnie Stanley at left tackle, Tyler Linderbaum at center, and Daniel Faalele at right guard.

Clock management issues: The Ravens took a timeout with the Bills lining up to go for it on fourth-and-2. However, Baltimore was assessed a timeout on a previous play because of an injury to cornerback Marlon Humphrey. As a result, Baltimore was charged with delay of game, and the Bills were granted a first down.

Ravens run defense shorthanded: Ravens nose tackle Michael Pierce did not play because of a shoulder injury. Pierce is one of the Ravens’ best run-stoppers and the team allowed 66 yards rushing on 18 carries to the Bills.

Other inactives: In addition to Vorhees and Pierce, the Ravens’ other inactive players were all rookies — center Nick Samac, safety Beau Brade, and wide receiver Devontez Walker.
