Ravens offer support to Chiefs after shooting at Super Bowl parade

OWINGS MILLS — The Ravens are rallying behind the Chiefs after one person was killed and 21 others were shot, including children, at a Super Bowl parade on Wednesday afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri.

An estimated 1 million people gathered near Union Station in downtown Kansas City for the parade and rally to celebrate the Chiefs’ second consecutive Super Bowl title.

Most of the Chiefs players had exited a stage when the gunfire erupted, which sent fans clad in red jerseys scrambling for safety or others helping the injured as law enforcement swarmed the area looking for assailants.

There were children among those shot, and it appeared that some fans tackled one of the gunmen.

Lisa Lopez-Galvan was identified as the person killed, according to her sister, Carmen Lopez Murguia.

Three people have been detained, but police have not identified them or announced any charges or that they have been arrested. Firearms were also recovered.

The Chiefs also issued a statement on the shootings:

“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all of Kansas City. We are in close communication with the Mayor’s office as well as the Kansas City Police Department. At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for. We thank the local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist.”

Several players, including Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, went on social media to express their condolences to the victims.

Defensive end Charles Omenihu, who was not in attendance for the parade after tearing his ACL in the AFC Championship Game, called for more gun control on X.

“Prayers for those affected at today’s parade. A time of celebration ends in tragedy. When are we going to fix these gun laws? How many more people have to die to say enough is enough? It’s too easy for the wrong people to obtain guns in America and that’s a FACT.”
