Ravens’ training camp: Marlon Humphrey, Owen Wright stand out on first day

OWINGS MILLS — The Ravens opened their 2024 training camp without two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was out with an illness.

Several other players took the spotlight.

Veteran cornerback Marlon Humphrey participated in all of the drills and locked down opposing wide receivers in coverage. Humphrey knocked down a couple of passes and helped keep the secondary organized.

That’s a good, early sign for the Ravens after Humphrey dealt with various injuries last season.

“Having Marlon Humphrey at full speed and at his best would be massively beneficial, and that’s what we expect him to be,”  Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “He’s in great shape. You saw it today in practice; he looked great. He gives us some great versatility in the back end [with] moving guys around.

“So, I would never discount Marlon Humphrey, if I was an opponent. I believe in Marlon. I think he’s one of the best players – one of the very, very best corners – in the National Football League.”

Fellow cornerback Arthur Maulet also had a solid practice. He had an interception when he snagged a pass by backup quarterback Josh Johnson that deflected off the hands of Malik Cunningham.

Outside linebacker Odafe Oweh consistently beat his opposing offensive linemen, including tackles Ronnie Stanley and Daniel Faalele, on 11-on-11 drills.

On offense, second-year running back Owen Wright made the most of his extended reps. Wright showed a quick burst out of the backfield and did a good job running between the tackles. Wright has put himself in a position to make the final roster.

“I just talked to Owen Wright yesterday about this, and I said, ‘I think you’re going to be a surprise, breakout kind of guy.’ He looks really good,” Harbaugh said. “He’s in great shape. He looked good last year, and I think he’s going to pick up where he left off and try to make a name for himself.”

The biggest offensive play of the day was when rookie quarterback Devin Leary threw a 45-yard pass down the sideline that was hauled in by undrafted rookie wide receiver Dayton Wade.

In addition to Jackson, running back Keaton Mitchell (PUP), outside linebackers Yvandy Rigby (undisclosed) and Addissa Isaac (non-football injury), and cornerback T.J. Tamps (PUP) did not practice.

To make room for the addition of safety Eddie Jackson, the Ravens waived undrafted rookie safety Jordan Toles, who’s from Morgan State.

Eddie Jackson was a full-go at his first practice on Sunday.
